The 2023 British Thoracic Society (BTS) Clinical Statement for the diagnosis and management of community acquired pneumonia people with learning disability has been published.
This BTS Clinical Statement addresses the risk assessment, prevention and management of community-acquired pneumonia in people with a learning disability of all ages. Each section is summarised with key clinical practice points. The recommendations made are based on a comprehensive review of the published evidence, where available and pertinent, but are predominantly based on expert opinion aimed at providing useful pragmatic guidance.
The statement is a comprehensive resource for Specialist Learning Disability Physiotherapists providing community level respiratory management to people with a learning disability.
BTS have also published a clinical statement on aspiration pneumonia which seeks to provide practical clinical guidance through sections covering the relevant epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and management (including palliative care considerations where appropriate).
